12 killed in Indian Air Force helicopter crash

BNO News

An Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter crash in the northwestern region of the country resulted in the death of all 12 people on board, officials said Friday.

The Mi-17 helicopter crashed in Bomdir near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, killing the 11 Air Force personnel and one Army officer on board. The helicopter was on its way to Guwahati and crashed only 5 minutes after taking off from Tawang at around 12 p.m. local time.

Lt. Col. Rajesh Kalia, spokesman of the army’s 4 Corps based at Tezpur in central Assam confirmed the death of the 12 individuals, whose bodies were all recovered.

The IAF has ruled out the possibility of weather being a factor in the crash as it was sunny on Friday, and even though an explosion three minutes after the helicopter’s take off is reportedly being considered as the probable cause, the IAF has not confirmed any details.

“Technical fault is a possibility but everything will be clear after the commission of inquiry set up to probe the crash submits its report,” senior IAF officer said.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has condoled the deaths.
