Indian Navy to get a Russian nuke attack submarine soon
INDIA TODAY
The Indian Navy will soon be equipped with a nuclear attack submarine. In a $900 million contract signed by India withBRussia in 2004, the submarine K-152 Nerpa was to be taken on a 10-year lease. The induction was halted because the submarine was involved in an accident in Russia. While the deal is now back having overcome the technical snag, the Indian crew had already been training on operating it.
While Nerpa will be a nuclear propelled submarine, it wouldn’t be accompanied by nuclear tipped ballistic missile, a capability that India is building separately with help from Russia.
India’s own nuclear submarine Arihant is still under production and was first revealed two years ago. Meant to complete India’s nuclear triad – capability to launch a strike from land, air and underwater – Arihant is being eagerly awaited for.
