Shore-based test facility for LCA by 2012

India will become the third country in the world, USA and Ukraine being the other two, to have shore based Test Facility (SBTF) for naval Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). The facility will come up in Goa, said S Sundaresh, Chief Controller, Research and Development, Armament and Combat Engineering CC, (R&D), ACE of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Sundaresh was speaking at a press conference organised on the backdrop of the golden jubilee of the Research and Development Establishment (Engineers), R&DE(E) here on Wednesday.

According to Sundaresh, the facility is being set up in Goa by R&DE (E). The Goa Shipyard Limited and Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) are also playing a major role in building the facility, which would consist of development and commissioning of runway and associated equipment.

The project is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2012.

Said Guruprasad, R&DE (E) director, “The design of the project has been developed by R&DE (E). This project will reduce the risk of testing the aircraft directly on the ship,”

The SBTF will be used to simulate an aircraft carrier for full-fledged flight testing of ship-borne attack aircraft as well as for training pilots.

The development will mostly be utilized to test the Naval version of LCA Tejas, while MiG-29K and sea harrier pilots will also practice on this runway once it becomes fully operational.

According to the officials, completion of older projects, such as Daksh, the remotely operated vehicle (ROV), and Netra are also gathering speed for induction into the armed forces. Both these vehicles have completed the testing. Various agencies, including the para military forces, will use these products.
